2024-07-09: tricking my dog

it's getting hot here. not like the heat waves hitting other places, where it's 35-40 degrees, but hot enough, and hot enough that my dogs shouldn't be running in it.

unfortunately, my younger dog knows exactly what it means when i'm wearing running shoes, so to be able to get out with minimal fuss, we've designed a ruse: i hide my running clothes in a bag, go to the garage, get changed there, go for my run. it seems to work. today was my first run in more than a month, and with a couple of runs coming up in september, i need to get back at it. so, 40 minutes or so in the high 20s heat, at a good pace, no stopping. it's a start.

i need to get back into a rhythm. i feel slow, i am slow. part of it's the broken routine, but part of it's also that i'm 20-25 lbs heavier than when i was running in my 20s. running feels different at 175 than it does at 150. and while in some ways i feel like i'm in better shape than i was then (i'm a lot stronger), my cardio's gone to hell, and the only one to blame there is me. time to get moving.
