2024-11-12: a sinking ship is still a ship

the last year i've been elsewhere (here, at bluesky, etc) and things have felt a lot quieter than what i was used to on twitter, because a lot of people refused to leave it, despite the owner, despite what was coming, despite what he was doing. some people just refused to take any steps towards making a better community. some said they'd stay till the lights went off. a sinking ship is still a ship? but since the us election, something's changed, and there's been a massive influx. now that it's happening, i can see certain people trying to recreate the same clout or strata that existed at the old site (with them in the centre), and it's hard not to feel resentment at this, a hateful sort of oh, fuck you.

they didn't leave because they didn't want to leave their sweet (then faltering) follower count on twitter, and now that that site's dying, they want to hit reset and go right back to where they were before.

i see the posts with the engagement bait and signalling that worked on the old site, and i can't really fault them, because it's the only kind of posting they've ever done, but it feels really empty and shallow. but i guess i shouldn't be surprised, given that they weren't interested in taking the necessary steps to make things better.
