2025-05-03: may's filling up

we have friends coming over for a big thanksgiving-like meal tonight. we call it friendsgiving, the only rules being that you have to invite your friends, and it can't be on thanksgiving. my partner did a lot of the prep work last night. still lots to do today, but the routine's been honed by a decade and a half of figuring things out. we'll have turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing; homemade creamed corn, roasted brussels sprouts with blue cheese and maple syrup and pecans. lots of beer. one of our friends is bringing a bottle of rosé. then tea, games, etc.

we have stuff with other friends tomorrow, too (feels like we have one of these weekends a couple times a month), and i need to do a bit of running around and get some garden supplies — potting soil & cow/sheep manure compost for the vegetable garden. we ordered plants via our goddaughter's school fundraiser, and they come next friday. that's...early where we live (frost is always a possibility in may), but we're going to have to pot everything, and then watch the temperatures closely. bring the pots back into the garage if we have to, and cover the tomatoes. we had to do this last year. one of the tomato plants took significant damage, but we pruned it and it turned out okay. hoping for better weather this year.

i have some commitments on may long, which means my partner might head west to visit her family for the long weekend, leaving me with the dogs. i'll maybe use the time to knock some stuff off my to-do list. it's felt like every evening i've had things on, and all the stuff i've meant to do has just sort of lingered.

at least the weather's turning. i've switched from making regular coffee to doing cold brew. this'll probably go until september. maybe october?

the chickadees are chirping their little song. we've got grackles at the feeder. a couple of ducks pacing the backyard. feels like spring.
