2025-07-23: surprisingly busy

last night we had our mostly-biweekly trivia at the brewery, and i had a rehearsal before that. once the rehearsal was done, i put my instrument and stand and music in the trunk, covered them in a ratty blanket, and drove across town to sit down with my team, a little late.

not that it really helped. we did terribly, one of our worst showings. ah well, (as always) the next one's coming up soon.

tonight: ballet with friends (i don't generally like ballet, but it's nice to see friends and get out). bonfire on saturday in the country at another friend's place. supper with others on sunday. in the meantime, lots of practice for quintet — things are coming along well, & lots of time before our gig, but i'm the weakest player and i've been marking sections that need to be in muscle memory. also, where people are coming in: if i lose my place, i can jump back in.

my fiddle's been sitting lonely in its case, and i've barely touched my classical guitar. i've been doing stuff on electric, though: preparing to do a bit of recording next week when i've got a couple of days completely to myself, and also a little bit of songwriting, or at least sketching. yesterday i made a cup of tea and was messing around with my strat on a quick afternoon break, and found a capo'd chord progression that could be something. it feels good to get back to this, to start getting back to things that were really important to me when i was younger. whether that's quintet (or wind-playing more generally), getting into songwriting, or whatever else. like a glimpse in the dark of who i used to be.
